Did Kim Kardashian's Curves Really Break The Internet?

So, if you’ve been online at all in the last week you MUST have hear about Paper Magazine’s new cover model Kim Kardashian. She had not one, but TWO provocative covers for Paper Magazine’s new issue. Most would say she didn't break the Internet but she sure got its attention!

The provocative cover images dropped and then the following day the inside images dropped, showing Kim completely nude.

I posted two of the cover photos, one where she's nude and the other fully clothed, on my @CurvyGirl_Chronicles Instagram and the reactions ranged from “This is art and beautiful” to “Trash!” Well they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

In my opinion the photo is too photo shopped and self - aware for me to consider it art or even beautiful. Great body but where’s the real? Any photo taken with the words “break the internet” in my opinion fails as art but is highly, HIGHLY successful marketing, love or hate her, no one markets themselves better than Kim Kardashian. Seriously, she should teach a class on branding and marketing, I'd take it.

There was also a discussion about cultural appropriation and Kim’s clothed cover mimicking Jean-Paul Goude’s “Champagne Incident” photo of a nude black woman with an exaggerated bum. In my opinion it reminds me of Sarah Baartman also referred to as the “Hottentot Venus” who was displayed in circus act freak shows during the 19th century. It just was too awkward for me, I prefer the nude photos over that one.

Did Tina Fey Predict This?

Many people reposted a quote from Tina Fey, which basically states how unfair it is for women to be expected to live up to media images or celebrity, false, plastic ideals. Shout out to fellow UVA Grad Tina Fey (WAHOOWA!!) I think she more than nails this one and of course even when she’s speaking truth it’s funny.
